Employee Engagement, or how to capture misengaged and disengaged employees
“Could you pass the salt?” asked my friend’s grandmother to her friend.
“Yeah, I thought they could have passed on the salt,” she replied, asking a third friend, “Wouldn’t you say?”
“I saw where that guy was assaulted. Horrible stuff,” they replied.
I sat there, wholly engaged but non-verbal as I watched my friend’s grandmother have three different conversations with her friends.
They all needed hearing aids but no one would deign to admit they needed them.
My friend was disengaged entirely as he scrolled through his phone.
This humorous picture of how life catches up to us is much the picture of many successful companies.
The long-tenured C-suite sure talks at each other, but they’re having different conversations. No one really hears one another.
Newcomers might be enthralled by the dysfunction, paying attention with a keen ear to everything going on, but are too dumbfounded to chime in.
Those who are still clocking in and out every day are disillusioned. The last time they spoke they were ridiculed or written up for insubordination. No wonder they remain silent with their head buried in the sand!
These misengaged and disengaged employees are varieties of the same symptom: employee engagement.
But how do you fix this in your own world?
First, be sure you engage with employees in a way that makes sense to them. They aren’t familiar with the day in, day out company metrics. Understand what they do and put things in terms of how they think of their day.
As you build this rapport, you both gain credibility with employees as they feel heard and understood and help them see how their participation affects where the company is going.
These concepts are simple, but they are not always executed with ease.
